Learning Objective

The learning objective of our VR experience was to let the user experience the Great Wall of China and its surrounding landmarks. The user should experience the rolling hill landscape surrounding the Wall, the iconic landmarks that lay along it, and how long the wall actually extends.

User Sense of Presence

The elements that extend the user sense of presence would include:

  • Hearing footsteps, as if the user were actually walking
  • Depth perception from the mountainous terrain that allows the user to experience the high and low points along the wall
  • Traditional Chinese music which gives the user a sense of the regional culture
  • Being able to travel to the different landmarks so the user gets a first-hand experience

Environment Design

The aspects of the environmental design used from the textbook include:

  • Color and Lighting: We used color extensively to emphasize the green, rolling hills surrounding most of the wall, and the to emphasize the Yellow River and the desert-like terrain that surrounds it. We used natural outdoor sunlight one would experience when walking along the Great Wall.
  • Audio: We used the spatialized audio of footsteps, to let the user experience the feeling of walking, as well as playing soft Chinese Traditional music in the background, giving the user an experience of the regional culture.
  • Wayfinding aids: We used traditional floating Chinese lanterns to let the user know in which direction to travel or where to select. The natural guidance of the Wall also helped in giving the user a general sense of direction.
